Child support may be paid by way of:
1. Cash payments; and / or 2. Non cash / periodic payments (for example, rent, utilities).
The amount of cash child support to be paid is determined by:
1. The Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) administrative assessment process; or 2. A private agreement between the parents.
The amount of non-cash / non-periodic child support to be paid is usually determined by private agreement between the parents.
The amount of cash child support to be paid is determined by a number of factors such as: the income of both parents, the children’s living arrangements and the number and age of the child / children.
If you would like an estimate of the amount of cash child support the DHHS may assess you as having to pay or receive, based on a standard, non-complex, scenario, pleaea refer to the Child Support Calculator on this page. The Calculator is based on the 8-step formula laid out by the DHHS.
How Are Child Support Payments Made:
- Periodic Payment
- Non-periodic payment
- Lump sum payment
- Non-agency payment

How is Child Support Calculated?
The Child Support Calculator will assist you in calculating the amount of child support you may be eligible to receive or obliged to pay.
To use the Child Support Calculator, insert the information requested and allow the calculator to estimate your child support entitlement or obligation. All input fields are required to receive an estimate. Further child support information and calculators are available at
https://processing.csa.gov.au/estimator/estimator.aspx.
There are situations when the child support calculator may not offer a reliable estimate, such as:
- When parents have multiple child support arrangements already in place.
- Parents have additional children in their care at home.
- When children have additional expenses, for example, health or education.
- When a parent incurs significant travel costs for the purpose of spending time with the child / children.
